Selfhelp Community Services Inc. provides a broad set of services to more than 25,000 elderly, frail, and vulnerable New Yorkers each year, while remaining the largest provider of comprehensive services to Holocaust survivors in North America.

Responsible for writing narrative, numerical, and financial proposals, letters of inquiry, and reports to foundation and corporate supporters, and for writing proposals to government agencies. Performs research, writing, editing and budget preparation. Conducts outreach to potential donors. Co-manages donor database, monitors deadlines, and produces reports. Maintains an active flow of communication around funding opportunities, monies received, and status of open projects.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the following:

  • Develop and write proposals, in coordination with program directors and fiscal and administrative staff, to respond to requests and contract solicitations from sources including, but not limited to, city, state, and federal agencies, UJA-Federation, and private foundations.
  • Work with program directors to develop narrative, numerical, and financial reports to funders.
  • Perform research needed for the preparation of submissions.
  • Write cover letters and acknowledgements to funders and other routine correspondence.
  • Researches and identifies foundation prospects, regularly monitors government funding channels, and informs all appropriate staff of opportunities for new funding.
  • Reach out to foundation and corporate staff to introduce Selfhelp as an organization and, in conjunction with Selfhelp program directors, elaborate on specific program needs. Arrange in-person and/or virtual site visits to Selfhelp programs.
  • Attend and report on bidders conferences related to requests for proposals with potential interest to the organization
  • Enters grant information, deadlines, and other pertinent information into Raiser’s Edge database and into hard files as appropriate.
  • With grants team, monitors database weekly to track upcoming deadlines and prepare spreadsheet containing this information.
  • Contribute actively to inter-departmental activities that further the short and long-term goals of Selfhelp Community Services.
  • Adheres to organization’s standards by completing annual mandatory trainings in a timely manner on topics including – but not limited to – Sexual Harassment Prevention Training, IT Security Awareness, Compliance, OSHA, HIPAA and any other training the organization may deem necessary in regards to regulatory compliance or good business practices.
  • Supports organization’s mission by striving for excellence in all aspects of their job with a focus on positive interpersonal relationship with co-workers.
  • Adheres to the organization’s policy in regards to absenteeism and appearance and health and safety standards.

To be considered you must possess:

  • Proven track record in securing grants from private foundations and government agencies; minimum of five years grant writing experience.
  • Strong project management skills for all aspects of grants process, from project definition through grant submission
  • Ability to multi-task and work independently and as part of a team with great attention to detail
  • Proactive and motivated self-starter
  • Computer literate. Experience with Raisers Edge database a plus.
  • Excellent verbal and written skills
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Bachelor’s degree (B.A. or B.S.) or equivalent from a four-year college;

Working Conditions/Physical Demand:

  • Business office environment with phone and computer use.
  • This position is hybrid (remote/office) after an initial in-office training period
