MAJOR FUNCTIONS:

Under close supervision, the Food Services Worker is responsible for assisting with the Food Services operation of the facility. This includes the safe, clean preparation of nutritional and appealing meals; storage of unused food; washing of dishes, pots, etc.; disposing of trash and/or assisting with the distribution of pre-cooked meals delivered by an outside vendor.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Depending on location will perform some or all of the following:

  • Assists with inventory, ordering and food storage.
  • Helps ensure that all food service operations are in compliance with health and safety codes while adhering to the agency menu plan.
  • Helps ensure a safe and sanitary working environment by picking up trash, cleaning and washing plates and dishes and wiping down tables as needed.
  • Cleans pots, pans and any other dishes in kitchen as needed, adhering to safety and sanitation standards at all times.
  • Assists with preparation of meals and plating of food.
  • Prepares simple meals such as salads or fruit plates.
  • Assists by cutting, peeling or slicing food as needed.
  • Serves clients who are waiting in line for meals.
  • Distributes pre-cooked meals delivered by an outside vendor.
  • Assures quality and quantity of food preparation and delivery to clients. Adheres to food safety standards at all times, making sure all food is free of contaminants and pathogens that could make clients sick.
  • Works cooperatively with staff and clients
  • Performs other duties as requested.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. High School Diploma or GED

2. Certification from accredited education institution for food services preparation preferred

3. New York State Food Handler Certificate

4. One year experience in food preparation and kitchen maintenance.

  • Good understanding of various cooking methods, ingredients, equipment and procedures.
  • Knowledge of kitchen sanitation, cleaning and maintenance
  • Accuracy and speed in executing assigned tasks
  • Familiar with best practices.
  • Good customer service skills
  • Ability to interact effectively with clients and staff.
  • Ability to read, write, speak and understand English
  • May be asked to cover at another site

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Will be cooking and heating hot food items and must take the necessary precautions.
  • Flexibility and patience are required.
  • Must be able to work under stressful conditions.
  • Must be able to multi-task
  • Standing for large periods of time with some bending, walking and reaching
  • Lifting and carrying (up to 25 pounds), reaching, squatting, and kneeling may be required.
  • Some potential hazard associated with clients who can become aggressive especially during crisis interventions.
