If this sounds like you, The Montgomery County Department of Parks, Southern Parks Division is the place you want to be! We are currently seeking experienced and highly motivated team players to join us as a Park/General Maintenance Worker III-PAC/PFA for our Cabin John Maintenance Area location within the Parks. This maintenance area contains over 80 Parks, 45 Athletic Fields, 33 Tennis Courts, 19 Basketball Courts, 47 Playgrounds and 17 miles of Trails.

Under general direction of a Park/General Maintenance Leader, the successful candidate will perform a variety of general park maintenance tasks such as playground repairs, grass mowing, trash removal, athletic field renovation and maintenance, trail maintenance, tree planting, pruning, and aftercare cleaning, repairing park buildings and structures while working with a crew or independently. The ideal candidate should possess skills to operate trucks, tractors with attachments, large riding mowers, loaders, and forklifts, as well as preventative maintenance and repairs on vehicles and equipment. Responsibilities include applying fertilizer to athletic turfgrass surfaces and other areas as a certified Pesticide Application professional, and occasionally leading teams of career and intermittent employees.

Examples of Important Duties

What the Job will Involve:


  • Apply fertilizer and pesticides as needed within certification.
  • Identify turfgrass issues and formulate solutions.
  • Occasional leading of park maintenance employees during the absence of the Leader.
  • Maintain and track inventories of supplies and materials.
  • Record daily tasks into the Enterprise Asset Management system.
  • Operation of mid-sized to large non-CDL equipment to include large mowers, tractors with attachments, backhoe, loader etc.
  • Operation of trucks, truck and trailer combinations, snowplows, dump trucks, trash trucks, etc.
  • Haul materials and equipment using non-CDL required trucks and trailers.
  • Ability to perform minor repairs to playground equipment, carpentry, custodial, and preventive maintenance tasks.
  • Perform general maintenance to playgrounds, buildings, grounds, and irrigation systems.
  • Responds to emergencies and inclement weather conditions such as hurricanes, blizzards, and earthquakes.
  • Athletic field maintenance includes operating tractor w/ attachment to rake, drag and grade fields. Rebuild mounds and Homeplate areas on ball fields.
Important Skills and Characteristics:
  • Knowledge of athletic field maintenance, groundskeeping, landscaping, parks and park/general maintenance operation, safety, turf maintenance, pesticides and their application, and basic auto and equipment maintenance.
  • Skill in operation of hand and power tools, riding mowers, tractors with attachments, and trucks and/or truck trailer combinations.
  • Ability to understand a system of procedures, read and understand labels, read and write routine reports and correspondence, and ability to check and respond to email communication.
  • Ability to utilize Department and Commission computers and information systems.
  • Ability to communicate in another language a plus!
Working Conditions:
  • Incumbent primarily works outside with a combination of office work occasionally or as assigned.
  • Exposure to various elements and all types of weather conditions, waste, pesticides, wildlife, and potentially harmful insects (e.g.: bees, hornets, wasps etc.).
  • Work requires constant kneeling, bending, twisting, lifting, and carrying of heavy objects of up to 100 pounds.
  • An essential employee required to be on-call 24 hours for any emergencies.
  • Must be available to work weekends and evenings as necessary.

Minimum Qualifications

1. High school graduate or GED, and four years of progressively responsible experience in groundskeeping, building maintenance, or park maintenance; and demonstrated ability to read and understand materials and instructions and write routine records and reports; or

2. An equivalent combination of education and experience.

3. Pass Commission medical examination.

4. Valid driver's license.

5. Additionally, contingent upon area of assignment, some positions in this class may require:

a. Commercial Driver's License with appropriate endorsements upon appointment, or the ability to acquire one within six months.

b. Maryland Department of Agriculture Pesticide Applicator's certification in the categories appropriate to the work assignment.

c. Certification by the National Playground Safety Institute.
