PASSAIC COUNTY DOMESTIC AND SEXUAL VIOLENCE CENTER (PCDSVC) is seeking an individual who is very resourceful and results oriented to work with the family unit at our Domestic & Sexual Violence residential safe house. The safe house (a confidential location) can accommodate up to 28 individuals who are seeking refuge from their abuser and/or an abusive environment. The Family/Child advocate shall create, provide, and coordinate services, as well as bring support in a case management style. The Family/Child advocate acts as a liaison between families, staff, the community, and other family-related services. The Family/Child advocate will be guided by our principles which include providing safety, support, advocacy, and resources to domestic and sexual violence survivors and their children. This individual will also educate the survivors on the cycle of abuse and must be committed to the empowerment of all survivors. Finally, the Family/Child Advocate recognizes and respects families with diverse values and culture, and is expected to treat individuals with dignity and respect.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (include but are not limited to):
· Provide trauma informed services to PCDSVC clients including support, advocacy, crisis intervention, individual safety planning, parenting support information and referrals
· Facilitate children’s group and activities; educational groups and support groups for parents; and activities that promote parent/child bonding
· Model and promote positive nurturing interactions between adults and children
· Model non-violent conflict resolution and use of nonviolent forms of guidance
· Interact with traumatized populations and handles crisis appropriately
· Provide emergency transportation and transportation for recreational activities as needed
· Identify family needs and provide referrals as needed
· Coordinate child care services as needed
· Arrange transfers for school-age children into area schools
· Prepare and maintain client records including social histories, chronological reports, case summaries and other information as needed
· Monitor and report child play activities
· Ensure school enrollment for all school age children in residence
· Maintain up-to-date records of all activities and submitting weekly reports to supervisory staff
· Provide cross-departmental and/or cross-functional support and direst services as needed or requested to ensure clients’ needs are met
· Participate in related cross-training to ensure consistency and continuity of services
- Perform other duties as assigned
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in social services, social work, psychology or related field, preferably in child psychology, early childhood development, adolescent development, or children counseling (Relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree)
- Minimum of three years of experience working with child and adult trauma survivors
- Experience facilitating groups and activities with children, teens, and adults preferred
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of situations where only limited information exists
- Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, or schedule formats
· Strong computer skills including Windows and Microsoft Office Suite
· Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
· Superb dispute and conflict resolution skills
· Ability to understand, formulate, and implement a viable plan of action for each family
