The successful candidate will perform manual and clerical work of a complex nature requiring expertise in the operation of a variety of office equipment, as well as complex office systems and procedures. The employee applies knowledge of City and other governmental rules and regulations and/or supervisor's instructions in receiving, identifying, inspecting, releasing and storing of property. Work also involves data entry, maintenance, and control on a daily basis of complex, highly confidential records. Work also involves detecting, collecting and processing evidence from and at crime scenes as well as maintaining the department fingerprint file. Work is performed in an office as well as responding to crime scenes as needed. Duties include other laboratory and administrative tasks as assigned.
The City of Puyallup is a community of 43,000 and is situated at the foot of scenic Mount Rainier in the beautiful Puget Sound region, 10 miles east of Tacoma and approximately 35 miles south of Seattle. The city is known as a regional commercial and service center for Eastern Pierce County, and serve its residents and neighbors with a strong, diversified economy.
Note: The salary provided is the 2022 monthly rates for this position.
- Maintains a legally sufficient chain of evidence; receives, marks and inventories property and/or evidence coming into the Property Room, inspects property for condition, damage and identification number and notes all pertinent facts; stamps evidence with case number;
- Maintains a filing system including a cross-reference index showing ownership, description, location and related details of all property;
- Maintains department fingerprint files;
- Detects, collects and processes evidence from crime scenes, operates photographic equipment and photographs crime scenes;
- Performs laboratory identification of marijuana, classifies and compares fingerprints and fingerprints individuals for department records;
- Testifies in court when necessary regarding the preservation and integrity of evidence presented in criminal proceedings;
- Prepares yearly audits, performs visual audit of all property and compares to inventory records;
- Gathers property and prepares for disposition, either by sale, auction, donation or destruction, in accordance with applicable rules and regulations;
- Operates a computer to enter property information and to produce written documents with clearly organized thoughts using proper sentence construction, punctuation, and grammar;
- Prepares department reports, reference receipts, and release of property/evidence as required;
- Interacts with the public, court, prosecutors, attorneys and insurance companies as required;
- Performs related duties as assigned.

- Maintain composure at unpleasant crime scene situations including homicides, officer involved shootings, and unusual or suspicious deaths.
- Recall facts in order to testify in court;
- Observe accurately and remember faces, numbers, incidents, and places;
- Understand and follow the policies, procedures and services of the department and the City;
- Make independent decisions of moderate importance;
- Learn and comprehend privacy and public disclosure laws, specialized language, terms and office equipment;
- Deal tactfully and courteously with other employees, City officials, members of the Criminal Justice system and the general public;
- Understand and follow quickly and accurately written and oral instructions;
- Operate a variety of office equipment to include typewriters and computers.
Special Qualifications:
- Possession of or the ability to obtain, and maintain throughout employment, a valid Washington State driver's license.
- Possession of or the ability to obtain ACCESS Certification.
- Possession of or the ability to obtain Marijuana Identification Technician Certification.
SELECTION PROCESS
Those applicants whose qualifications most closely correspond to the City's current needs will be contacted for interviews and/or testing. The appointing authority may conduct second interviews.
Notification – Following submission of application, an email acknowledgment receipt of application is given. Persons selected for an interview and/or testing will be notified by email, normally within 15 working days following the closing date on the job announcement.

Hours of Work – This is a full-time, 40 hour per week position. The work schedule is likely to include evenings and/or weekends.

Paid Leave: Regular, full-time, unaffiliated City employees receive 8 hours of sick leave per month and 12 holidays per year, and vacation days are earned at the rate designated by Policy 2.7.3, Vacation Accrual and Use, of the Administrative Policies and Procedures of the City of Puyallup. Vacation, sick leave, and holiday leave are prorated for regular, part-time employees.

Retirement: Regular-status City employees are mandatory members of the State of Washington Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS). Employees and the City jointly contribute to the plans. Deferred compensation plans are also available on an optional, voluntary basis.
Group Insurance: Currently, unaffiliated full-time, regular-status employee benefits include City paid medical, dental, and vision coverage for employees and their dependents, plus life and long-term disability insurance coverage for employees. Employees may be required to premium share benefit costs depending upon their status in the city's wellness program. Employees scheduled on a regular status part time basis will be offered pro-rated insurance benefits.
