This position works as Professional Engineer (PE) or as an Engineer-In-Training (EIT) performing independent geological engineering duties for the Radioactive Waste Management Section. The Environmental Engineer 3 completes the final review, approval, and oversight of activities associated with the closure of the commercial low-level radioactive waste disposal facility, a uranium mill facility, and mineral processing facilities.
The Department of Health (DOH), in conjunction with the federal government, must determine that the facilities are closed in a manner that meets all regulatory standards and engineering requirements for the eventual return of those facilities to the federal government or other regulatory agencies as required.
This position will help ensure that the engineering plans, specifications, and quality assurance meet all required specifications and contribute to the DOH mission to protect and improve the health of the people in Washington State and the environment.
The duty station for this position is in Spokane Valley, WA. Telework (mobile work) is currently expected. When approved, the incumbent is expected to report to the duty station for work activities. Partial telecommuting may be an option subject to supervisory approval. It is anticipated that the incumbent would be expected to at the duty station for work activities one (1) day per week.
This is a full-time permanent position.

Duties Include
Providing professional technical engineering support for the following activities at Dawn Mining:
- Oversight of Evaporation Pond (EP-6) operations and decommissioning activities
- Final status survey and assist with DOH verification
- Alternate Concentration Limit (ACL) and associated SEPA activities
- Closure planning and activities
- Surety estimate activities
- The Waste Management staff and management
- The regulated community and their consultants
- The public
Performing surface reclamation stabilization monitoring and reviewing annual monitoring reports from licensees.
Preparing for and respond to radiological and other emergencies.

Required Qualifications
- Option 1: Bachelor’s degree in geological engineering, civil engineering, geology, environmental engineering, or hydrogeology; and five (5) or more years of environmental or geo-technical experience or closure activities at complex industrial sites.
- Option 2: Master’s degree in geological engineering, civil engineering, geology, environmental engineering, or hydrogeology; and three (3) or more years of environmental or geo-technical experience or closure activities at complex industrial sites.
- Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE).
