The Engineer, Magnetics will identify, evaluate, and accelerate new technologies to support MP Materials’ mission to restore the full rare earth supply chain to the United States of America. This position will provide thought leadership regarding the interaction between metallurgical processes, microstructural characteristics, and magnetic performance, both tracking and advancing the state of rare earth science. This position will be expected to maintain a hands-on role across processing, design, prototyping, and testing of rare earth metals and alloys, bulk materials, powders, permanent magnets and magnetic components. The Engineer, Magnetics will work closely with other internal and external subject matter experts in the manufacturing and application of rare earth magnets and other products to develop scalable technologies that become commercially attractive permanent magnet processes and products. This position will be expected to manage external partnering relationships across the academic, industrial, and Federal laboratory communities.
Essential Duties:
- Provide technical expertise and support for rare earth magnet processing and product research and development directions, including the following activities:Review, track, interpret, and maintain the technology landscape in rare earth magnet research and development, including scientific literature, trade journals, and patents.
Formulate and then continually update a multi-year technology roadmap that incorporates both technical and commercial objectives for rare earth products.
Identify new process and product technology opportunities for magnets and other rare earth product, and evaluate the risk, benefit, and maturity of those opportunities.
Map and expand upon the current understanding of the fundamental physics and process-microstructure-property relationships and tradeoffs in rare earth magnet manufacturing.
Devise industrially scalable strategies to simplify and/or improve the processes used to manufacture rare earth magnets.Devise industrially scalable strategies to improve the magnetic, thermal, and structural performance of current and future MP Materials products.
- Work with external academic, industrial, and Federal laboratory collaborators to shape programs, write proposals, and manage and complete projects.
- Lead internally- and externally-sponsored projects on the development rare earth metals and magnets technologies, with a focus on speed of execution, financial discipline, and minimized EHS impact.
- Document and disclose intellectual property, and support preparation of patent applications and office actions.
Other Functions:
- Provide visibility for MP Materials within the permanent magnet community by publishing in technical and trade journals and presenting at conferences.
- Design and conduct hands-on experiments to evaluate and improve the performance of magnet materials and manufacturing methods.
- Provide modeling and characterization support for MP Materials magnet development.
- Other duties as assigned.
Basic Qualifications:
- BS degree in Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, or related field.
- 5+ years’ experience with industrial scale product development for permanent magnets and/or assemblies, such as EV motors, consumer electronics, medical devices, and scientific instrumentation.
- 5+ years’ experience with performance testing of permanent magnets, including both laboratory and industrial-scale QA/QC testing techniques and instrumentation.
Desired Qualities:
- MS or PhD preferred
- Technical knowledge of microstructural engineering in general, and grain boundary engineering in particular.
- Knowledge and experience in developing experimental plans, conducting sound experiments, and interpreting the results toward achieving specific objectives.
- Ability to identify and solve problems and convince others (customers, management, peers, and operators) that your solution is the right one.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Expert level user of Microsoft Office suite.
- Experience with programming/modeling, and the ability to apply those skills to automate routine analysis, data management, and process control operations.
