The mission of the Human Resources is to provide services in recruitment, benefits administration, consulting professional and organizational development and retention for administrators, faculty, staff and prospective employees of Virginia State University to foster development of our students.

The Employee Relations Consultant will serve as a proactive change agent acting as a consultant and coach to employees and managers in employee relations. They will promote consistency and fairness in all practices and demonstrate our values to ensure a positive work environment while mitigating risk for the University.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Public Administration or other related fields.
  • Knowledge of laws, policies and procedures relating to Employee Relations and Human Resources principles
  • Demonstrated ability to: make recommendations that effectively resolve problems or issues by using judgment consistent with standards, practices, policies, procedures or law
  • Objectively coach employees, supervisors and managers through complex, difficult and emotional issues using discretion in confidential areas
  • Manage and guide others with the Standards of Conduct and grievance procedure
  • Commitment to and training in restorative practices, conflict resolution/management and/or other industry accepted alternative dispute resolution methods, exercise sound judgement and discretion in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with employees, managers, and other agencies
  • Research and analyze information to arrive at logical conclusions, recommendations and action plans
  • Manage projects
  • prepare comprehensive reports and present ideas clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
  • Organize and prioritize work
  • Administer assessments and compliance reviews
  • Make presentations
  • Conduct training and investigations
  • Considerable knowledge with the following federal/state/local laws: ADA, FLSA, FMLA, HIPPA
  • Considerable knowledge with and ability to train in restorative practices, conflict management/resolution or other industry accepted alternative dispute methodologies
  • Advance computer and Microsoft Office skills and use of other applications as necessary for the position
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, excellent customer service and listening skills
  • Ability to work with little to no supervision
  • Detail oriented and strong organizational skills
  • Ability to handle multiple projects
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Proven self-starter with demonstrated ability to make decisions
  • High professional standards of confidentiality
  • Excellent investigative and report writing skills

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Public Administration or other related fields.
  • Minimum of (5) years of experience in human resources.
  • Professional Human Resources (PHR) Certification or SHRM- Certified Professional preferred but not required.
