Overall Purpose:
The Employee and Labor Relations Specialist I will be responsible for the daily execution of employee/labor relations matters. The Employee and Labor Relations Specialist I will utilize proactive and responsive approaches to solve employee/labor relations related issues and promote a positive and productive work environment. The Employee and Labor Relations Specialist I will ensure compliance with all relevant laws, regulations, policies and practices. Reporting to the Senior Manager, Employee and Labor Relations, this position works collaboratively with all levels of the organization to maximize overall organizational effectiveness.
Job Responsibilities:
- This position requires the proven ability to drive progressive HR strategies while maintaining compliance with all federal, state, and local legislation as it applies to Human Resources.
- Provide counsel and direction in employee and labor relations activities for the company while maintaining the highest level of discretion and confidentiality particularly as it relates to confidential employee information including salary information, job performance, and medical information.
- Maintain a professional, communicative relationship with all levels of union leadership and business unit leadership.
- Advise management on company policies and procedures as they relate to the Labor Agreement, grievance procedures, union performance management, disciplinary actions, etc.
- Administers the Grievance process including advising department management on disposition of grievance disputes. Gathers investigatory materials as required to properly defend the Company during arbitration hearings.
- Advise management on disciplinary matters and the application of disciplinary procedures.
- Be a strategic change agent within the company - demonstrating ability to influence, negotiate, and gain commitment at all levels of the organization.
- Conducts investigations into allegations of harassment, discrimination, policy violations as well as employee concerns and complaints and recommends appropriate action
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills specifically with regard to effectively managing and documenting investigations and resolution of employee issues.
- Ability to effectively present information to management, and/or other groups as required.
- Excellent customer focus, has a strong sense of urgency - is responsive, has excellent service skills and follow through.
Education/Experience Requirements:
Roles at this level require industry specific experience. Roles at this level typically require a university / college degree. With 7+ years of relevant experience. Certifications are often required.
Experience in HR legal compliance (employment practices, EEO/Affirmative Action), policy/program development, safety program knowledge (OSHA laws and regulations).
Excellent oral and written communication skills. Strong interpersonal skills required.
Unquestioned integrity and confidentiality. Proficient with Microsoft Office including Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Proficient in operating company email, calendar, intranet, and Internet technology.
Decision Impact:
Problems and issues faced are vague and require reasoning to identify root cause. Draws on significant past experience to perform role. Proficient in the body of knowledge of given discipline or specialty area. Accountable for direct level of reasoning and decision making.
Scope:
Primary Focus is on daily deliverables, outputs and reporting. Accountable for managing ones own time and work flow. Responsibilities are generally tactical in nature and work is typically complex in nature requiring the incumbent to draw on previous knowledge to perform role. Has a well-established capabilities, acts as a resource to less experienced staff on routine issues.
Supervisory:
May coordinate the work flow of a given team. May support the review of work and training of other employees.
