Education and Outreach Assistant Job at CARDINAL POINT CAPTAINS INC
CPC seeks a qualified Education and Outreach Assistant to work at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Office of National Marine Sanctuaries (ONMS) located at the National Marine Sanctuary of American Samoa (NMSAS).
Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist with media communications, constituency outreach, and provide graphic design services and website support.
- Work with partners to develop and deliver informal interpretive programs to a diverse general public audience as well as programs that address major ecological, biological, geological, and cultural interpretive themes identified by the site.
- Assist or conduct outreach operations and support the development and coordination of display and exhibits for the site’s visitor center. Support the development of cultural interpretive programs.
- Liaise with sanctuary families to ensure familiarity and awareness of unit specific regulations and program priorities such as science, research, education/outreach, community projects and partnerships.
- Assist with discussions in the village setting and organizes materials, logistics as well as confirms delegates to sanctuary meetings.
- Assist within the sanctuary villages at Festival of Sites, Summer Science in the village youth program, and other on-going efforts.
- Work with Samoan territorial government and communities using appropriate cultural protocols
- Provide administrative support for outreach programs, and assist in coordinating other programs that support these efforts.
- Provide Ocean Center Learning tours for schools, communities, residents and visitors
- Associates Degree (or higher degree) from an accredited community college or from an accredited college or university in Education, Marine Science or related field.
- Educational background and/or professional experience in Natural Sciences, Education, Communications, or other education and outreach-related field.
- At least two (2) years of experience conducting culturally appropriate work with Samoan communities.
- At least two (2) years’ experience in informal education or teaching, and some experience developing and implementing curriculum with aquatic, ecosystem, or Samoan themes.
- Experience working with community groups, interagency working groups, and professionals in the fields of education, outreach, management and policy.
- Experience in organizing educational programs and other community events.
- Field experience among the coral reefs of American Samoa.
- Demonstrable knowledge of American Samoa's cultural and natural history, including coral reef ecosystems.
- Able to communicate effectively in both Samoan and English languages.
