Early Literacy Coach
STATUS: Full time. Salaried. Exempt. 40 hour work week on average
DEPARTMENT: Youth Programs
REPORTS TO: Educate Program Manager
DIRECT REPORTS: Designated Interns and Volunteers
SPECIAL CONDITIONS:
- Fingerprinting and background check are required. Must clear all background checks.
- Reliable transportation; current driver’s license; FL State driver insurance coverage required.
- Evening and weekend availability may be required for special events, trainings, community events, etc.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
- The Early Literacy Coach provides weekly home visits to assigned children, birth to kindergarten. This includes conducting assessments, nurturing the development of a strong parent-child relationship and connecting families to additional early intervention services as needed.
RESPONSIBILITIES (Include, but are not limited to):
EARLY LITERACY DEVELOPMENT & SUPPORT
- Carry an assigned caseload of youth ages, birth to kindergarten. Visit each youth weekly to model and observe activities for parent led and engaged early language, literacy and early reading development.
- Plan and direct services and activities utilizing the “Birth to 5: Watch Me Thrive!” curriculum, Child Milestones checklist and the Florida Kindergarten Readiness Screening.
- Complete Developmental Screenings and Assessments and review each child’s progress with parents.
- Use child assessment information and observations to guide parents in planning and implementing home visit activities and follow-up home activities.
- Work as a team to plan and conduct workshops and events
- Maintain open communication with caregivers, child welfare staff to ensure complete services for each child
- Work cooperatively with staff to ensure youth have access to multiple agency services and resources as needed
- Work with community partners to provide additional early intervention services and resources as needed
- Attend meetings/trainings, interagency meetings and community events as assigned
- Maintain up-to-date activity sheets and home visit reports
- Submit monthly reports in an accurate and timely manner
- Coordinate volunteer learning support services
PARENT ENGAGEMENT AND ASSISTANCE
- Help parents to understand important developmental milestones for their child and offers guidance about early screening
- Promote the importance of the family’s involvement in their child’s education. Prepare the family to advocate for their child’s educational experiences when transitioned to the public school system
- Work with parents to track personalized milestones for each child’s literacy development.
- Provide and review with parents, weekly Scholastic Little Readers books and corresponding learning activities to strengthen reading skills and comprehension
- Provide liaison and advocacy services between the family and both internal and external resources

DATA MANAGEMENT
- Develop and maintain accurate, up-to-date reports on all children participating in the program.
- Collect, record and track program outcome and follow-up activities including pre and post assessments, thank you letters and photos.
- Analyze program data to improve the program based on feedback from participants.
- Collect and compile qualitative data (stories, photos) from program youth
- Complete child learning plan and goals, newsletters, parent notices, etc.
- Assist in paperwork and filing; including entering into data bases
- Participate in any training or conferences as requested.
- Provide in-kind opportunities and collect and document.
- Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
SOCIAL MEDIA
- Assist with public relations and media outreach by providing/creating stories, thoughts and ideas for digital (website, e-newsletter, etc.) and social (Facebook, etc.) media.
- Identify and implement a strategy for using social media for ongoing communications with youth in target age range.
MISCELLANEOUS
Attend professional conferences/seminars/meetings as requested by the Executive Director.
- Other duties as may be assigned by the Executive Director.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Minimum of Bachelor’s degree in early education, a related degree with equivalent coursework in Early Childhood education or a related field.
- Master’s level in relevant field a plus.
- Minimum of 3 years professional experience in early childhood field serving prenatal-infants-toddlers with home visiting experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- General knowledge of issues and dynamics within the foster care system preferred.
- General knowledge of Metro Orlando non-profit community.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

- Ability to work within set guidelines and yet be creative towards a solution.
- Demonstrated ability to build working relationships with individuals of various ages, cultures, socioeconomic backgrounds and abilities.
- Excellent organizational and customer service skills with high attention to detail.
- Ability to adapt to changing job demands, workload and priorities.
- Experience utilizing data collection, analysis, and reporting skills.
- Ability and aptitude with Microsoft Office Suite, Excel and other technology necessary for successful day-to- day functioning in business environment.
- Knowledge of Home Based individualized Family/Child educational curricula methods for infants and toddlers
- Maintaining order when supervising children, while expressing warmth and friendliness
- Maintaining composure, and working effectively under home visiting conditions
- Communicating effectively with adults and children.
WORKING CONDITIONS: The majority of the work is performed in the FFC offices, which are well lighted and adequately ventilated. The noise level in the working environment is usually moderate. Transportation to and from offsite locations is required, which will result in exposure to temperature changes. Conditions at off-site locations will vary considerably.
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Mental effort – use of listening, critical thinking and problem solving skills when interacting with employees, volunteers, donors, clients and community members. Ability to multi-task.
- Physical Requirements – long periods of sitting, working on a computer, walking to various work areas, going up and down stairs, talking on the phone, working with office/computer equipment, attending meetings, and sitting at desk or table while listening, talking and taking notes. Standing during meetings as presenter and/or facilitator. Able to frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
