Director of Operations Job at Mojave Air and Space Port
Mojave Air & Space Port at Rutan Field is actively recruiting for a Director of Operations to help take the organization to the next level of space and aircraft testing operations. We are looking for an individual who has a background in airport operations, but more importantly, possesses exceptional customer service skills, and understands how to work with our tenants to meet their needs, and can make sound decisions focused on safety while creative enough to figure out how to make the impossible possible. This individual will be responsible for the daily coordination of various flight activities, ground rocket testing, and oversight of special events. The position will oversee the privately-owned/operated Air Traffic Control Tower, Security, ARFF, and Facilities Departments.
What the Position Entails
- Reports directly to the General Manager/CEO and acts in the absence of the GM when required.
- Assists with development and direction of District Policies.
- Oversees and directs daily operations for both airside and landside operations.
- Develop and provide training to staff and ensure all proper documentation.
- Manage test site facilities, test site contracts, and address all client needs for operations.
- Coordinate and approve all special events and filming activities.
- Manage the FAA AST licensure and review all hazardous fuel storage issues.
- Coordinate and approve all Safety and Security Operations Manuals, making recommendations and changes as appropriate to meet the needs of the Airport.
- Participate and assist with regular Safety Meetings including annual RSAT meetings.
- Represents the Airport as the Public Information Officer (PIO) in emergency events.
- Represent the Airport at Federal, State, Local, and Trade Association Symposiums and Committees.
- Liaise with Federal, State, and local entities.
- Work closely with the GM to make a cultural shift from “enforcement” to “compliance” throughout the organization and all stakeholders and tenants.
What You Bring
- Solid understanding of theory and practice of Airport Operations concepts gained from at least four years of Airport Operations experience, at a Part 139 or General Aviation Airport.
- At least two years’ experience working in a leadership role with direct reports. This position requires the ability to lead directors and employees, proven leadership skills are a must!
- Top-notch customer experience skills. This position requires an individual who can say “no” but instead figures out how to make the impossible possible.
- Experience teaching and training personnel on Airport Operations best practices, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
- Ability to think outside the box to develop creative solutions to daily challenges.
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution in Airport Management, Aviation Science, Business or Public Administration. Equivalent combination of education, military experience, training and relevant airport experience will be considered. Master’s degree highly desirable.
- At least two years’ experience in a supervisory role with direct reports.
- 8 – years of continued airport management experience will be considered in lieu of a bachelor’s degree.
- Certified Member or possession of an Airport Certified Employee (Operations or Security) designation through the American Association of Airport Executives (AAAE) strongly preferred.
- Preference will be given to applicants with a valid FAA Pilot Certificate, FAA Certified Tower Operator/Radar Approach Control certificates.

Salary Range:
$80,000 - $120,000 annually, based on experience and credentials.

The Mojave Air & Space Port at Rutan Field is the only dedicated civilian test flight facility in the nation, and the first FAA-Licensed inland facility for horizontal launch operations of reusable spacecraft.
