Wildland Trekking Co. is looking to hire dedicated Day Hike Guides. Ideal candidates for Day Hike Guide positions will have personal and professional day hiking experience and guiding experience with hiking guests of all ages. Day hike trips with Wildland Trekking range from 5-11 hours with mileages that range from 5-10 miles in a day. Day hikes vary in difficulty and solitude levels. Day Hike Guides prepare lunch on the trail and manage all aspects of the day’s trip with guests, including transportation where included. Day Hike Guides are responsible for interpretive information, risk management, and guest satisfaction.
Day Hike Guides must be available for a minimum of 3 consecutive days a week, plus a preparation day, during peak seasons for day hikes.
Wildland Trekking guarantees compensation for 12 day hikes a month during Program Area’s peak seasons*. See Compensation Details for more information.

Job Description:
Position: Day Hike Guide
Reports To: Program Manager
Pay Type:
- Hourly – Non-Exempt – Part-Time*

Working Conditions: This job is based at the area branch location. Area branch season to be defined at hire.
Job Objective: Guide day hike trips to enhance the lives of our guests by doing everything possible to lead and facilitate a safe, fun, positive, unforgettable outdoor adventure experience while fostering a respect and appreciation for the special places we travel in.
Primary Responsibilities:
Policies & Procedures
- Maintain and adhere to Wildland Trekking Co. (WTC) and Wildland Llamas (WL) Minimum Operating Standards, all policies and procedures as outlined in the Field Staff Handbook and HR Handbook, and all directives from Program Manager (PM) or Director;
- Follow and adhere to the WTC Prime Directive five priorities: guest and guide safety; adherence to the rules and regulations of all commercial permits; care for the environment; care for the equipment; and guest satisfaction;
- Read and have a thorough understanding of WTC's Trip Terms and Conditions;
- Maintain a working knowledge of all company communication as applicable to position and field policies;
- Self-manage and maintain a current Guide Staffing Portal and seek approval with Staffing Department on any schedule changes;
Pre-trip Preparation:
- Complete a trip briefing with PM on each pre-trip preparation day;
- Conduct pre-trip contact by calling or emailing each guest no later than one week prior to your trip start date with the following goals:
- establish introductions;
- learn special dietary or other requests/needs;
- assist guests with any questions or concerns;
- remind guests of specific gear and personal items needed for trip type and weather conditions;
- confirm pickup and/or orientation time and location;
- Conduct trip briefings with the guests: educate them on health and safety issues pertinent to hiking and the environment; assist and fit guests for proper gear and personal items to take on the trip; confirm trip details and departure time;
- Complete necessary pre-trip preparations for gear and food appropriate for the trip including a thorough check of all gear for appropriateness, cleanliness, and functionality;
Executing a Trip
- Structure trips to reflect the Trip Information Packets and company website;
- Display strong leadership, teaching/interpretation, customer service, positive attitude, patience and communication skills at all times;
- Demonstrate a passion to share with others this country’s inspiring natural wonders;
- Possess ability to find common ground and connect with novice guests of different ages, backgrounds and nationalities;
- Provide informative natural and human history interpretation pertaining to the trip type and area;
- Maintain open communication with support staff and Program Manager by caring for and checking the communication device according to protocols;
- Drive 12-15 passenger vans following all safe driving policies and perform daily vehicle safety inspections;
Food and Cooking
- Pack food, prepare menus, and cook meals appropriate for each guest’s specific dietary needs and requests, provide variety, and ensure enough food for the entire group;
- Maintain and adhere to proper food handling guidelines, WTC procedures, food codes, and backcountry food handling procedures per training and certification from a Public Health Services course, both in the field and in designated Company food room or area;
- Know and adhere to daily per person per day food budgets for the trip type;
Risk Management & WFR/EMT
- Follow WTC procedures for First Aid, Medications, Hygiene, and Drinking Water;
- Follow the “WMI Wilderness Medicine Field Guide” for all backcountry medical incidents;
- Effectively handle risks and follow WTC emergency field policies; know who to call and when for support and “call status” for company emergency line;
- Carry and maintain ready access to issued First Aid Kit at all times during a trip;
- Maintain awareness of guest behavior and desire, and/or weather or terrain conditions to make appropriate modification to the trip schedule as needed; notify and/or obtain approval from 24/7 Emergency line or PM in these cases;
- Know medical history and current conditions of guests and maintain awareness to all guests for potential medical situations while on any trip;
- Maintain awareness for hazardous or exposed environments, including weather, plants, and animals, and follow standard procedures as trained and/or outlined in the Field Staff Handbook;
- Carry appropriate gear; brief guests of travel and emergency techniques; actively manage groups to minimize hazards and maintain safety;
Post Trip
- Complete all necessary trip paperwork; if necessary debrief with PM;
- Complete post-trip duties and gear inspections as outlined for the program area by the PM;
- Maintain all receipts;
- Submit completed and sign all required payroll forms along with trip receipts in a neat, organized, and timely manner subject to the bi-weekly payroll schedule;
Additional Duties
- Field staff positions may include driving (possibly with a trailer), porter support, other additional trip support, training new field staff, and providing support in the warehouse or general duties for the program area. All positions and responsibilities must adhere to all rules and regulations of the commercial use permit, all policies and procedures as outlined in the Field Staff Handbook and HR Handbook, and directives from Managers and Directors.
Required Qualifications:
- 21 years or older, as required by insurance to drive;
- Must be available to attend and successfully complete all day hike trainings (dates and details depend on location);
- Must be able to pass a background check, motor vehicle record check, and a drug test (CA only);
- Must be able to obtain a Backcountry Food Handlers Certification;
- Must hold a current Wilderness First Responder Certification or Wilderness EMT or be willing to obtain certification before training start date;
- Ability and willingness to hike up to 15 miles in a day with a weighted pack of up to 50 lbs;;
- Must have strong leadership, teaching/interpretation, and communication skills;
- Must have availability during defined peak seasons at a minimum of 3 days a week/ 12 days a month;
- Guide’s 3 days of availability must be consecutive days as defined by Staffing Department; Time off requests require approval from the Staffing Department;
Preferred Qualifications:
- HIGHLY RECOMMENDED: At least 1-2 years of professional guiding experience (backpacking, mountaineering, outdoor education, rafting…etc.) and/or training and professional experience in outdoor education (i.e. NOLS, Outward Bound, degree in Outdoor Education or related field, Wilderness Therapy, other Adventure Travel companies, etc).
- Excellent verbal communication skills and interpersonal skills;
- Value and embody integrity, sense of ownership and dedication to customer satisfaction
- Strong background in geology, ecology, biology, outdoor recreation…etc. and/or extensive knowledge of the Parks in which we operate;
- Excellent outdoor cooking skills and ability to create a fantastic menu;
- Creativity and flexibility to make sure every trip exceeds your guests’ expectations;
- A love of hiking and America’s wild lands and national parks;
- Enthusiastic about working for The Wildland Trekking Company and have a passion for outdoor adventure;
- Leave No Trace certification;
- Expertise in at least one of our program locations;
- Speak and write English fluently; Fluent in French and/or German, Spanish, Mandarin, Japanese a plus.
- Two years of commercial driving experience (any job where you had to at least occasionally transport passengers;

Compensation is based on 12 day hikes per month and will be paid bi-weekly based on 3 day hikes per work week. This is hourly compensation following the expected hours system outlined in the Pay Schedule and defined for the Program Area.
Expected hours will be: 7 hours per week for preparation that includes emails to guests, menu planning, shopping for and packing food and prepping day hike gear for the number of guests and 11 hours per each day hike for a total of 40 expected hours per work week. Any additional hours worked and any overtime will be fully compensated following the Program Area overtime rules.
To meet the availability requirement of 12 or more day hikes a month, Day Hike Guides need to be available for 3 consecutive days a week, plus preparation hours, during peak times per program area as defined by the Staffing Department.
Hourly compensation will be paid even if the day hike does not have bookings*.
- Some confirmed departures will have zero bookings at the time they are staffed, guides need to remain available up to 24 hours before departure
- If zero bookings or a cancellation occurs on a date you were scheduled, you will be moved to an On-Call shift and/or alternative work as defined by Staffing Department
- In the event of zero bookings or a cancellation, you will receive the hourly pay following to Program Area for the expected hours for the day hike for On-Call shift and/or alternative work
