Description
The Kentucky Historical Society (KHS) offers an opportunity to join a team of people dedicated to preserving and exploring Kentucky’s rich and fascinating past and then using the power of history to improve life today. As Curator of Collections at KHS, you will provide leadership on a team that cares for, catalogs, and interprets collections so that all Kentucky Historical Society projects, programs, and activities elevate what we know about Kentucky history.

This position actively develops the KHS collection by working with donors and communities and by engaging in contemporary and responsive collecting. The Curator of Collections also provides stewardship of the agency’s object collection so that these strategic assets are accessible for research, teaching, and writing about their place in Kentucky history. This position is highly collaborative, often working in partnership with internal colleagues as well as supporting collecting organizations across the Commonwealth.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Proactively guide the maintenance, stewardship, and continuous improvement of the KHS object collection.
  • Help develop ways in which objects and archival materials can be interpreted and utilized through exhibitions, publications, events, and presentations.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to ensure the ongoing care of the KHS object collection.
The primary office for this position is located in the Kentucky History Center, 100 West Broadway Street, downtown Frankfort, Kentucky.

This is a full-time, Monday through Friday, 37.5 hours per week position. Occasionally weeknight, weekend, or holiday hours may be required to meet the mission and programmatic needs of the Kentucky Historical Society and its museums.

Minimum Requirements
EDUCATION: Master’s Degree in history, museum studies, or related field.

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: Three (3) years of professional experience in museum or history- related institution. Demonstrated facility in public speaking, writing, and communicating with multiple kinds of audiences. Advanced internet, word processing, database management, spreadsheets, and email use. Must be able to manage multiple, complex projects from concept to completion. PastPerfect computer application experience preferred.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): Knowledge of material culture and museum cataloging practices. Adherence to professional code of ethics and involvement in museum organizations.
Working Conditions
Must be able to visually inspect the change in the condition of archival documents and collections objects; retrieve collection objects regularly that may weigh up to 40lbs; able to regularly bend/stoop/reach in order to retrieve and store collection objects. Frequent use of a computer, monitor, keyboard, and mouse. May occasionally be required to travel in- and out-of-state relating to collections management and accessions.
