Correctional Lieutenant III - Wake County Job at North Carolina Adult Correction

**The standardized annual salary for this position is $56,562* dependent upon fund availability and OSHR approval.***

Reporting to the Correctional Captain III, this position is responsible for the supervision of subordinate staff at a multi-level male correctional facility. This position's other responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

Conducting shift line-up, making shift assignments and inspecting all personnel to determine if they are physically and mentally capable of assuming an assigned post.

  • Completing reviews and maintaining employee time reports, duty rosters, leave schedules, performance evaluations and administrative forms.
  • Insuring that all assigned equipment is operational, providing daily inspection of offenders living areas, medical, kitchen areas and the facility to identify possible safety hazards and to ensuring the operation is running smoothly.
  • Identifying training needs and coordinating delivery of training to subordinate staff.
  • Conducting investigations, searching of staff, visitors and offenders for contraband and responding to emergency situations as needed.
  • Serving as Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of the facility when his/her rotation is working in the absence of the Correctional Captain as needed.

This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits. The selected candidate may be selected to work any shift and will work weekends and holidays to ensure 24/7 staff coverage.

The salary grade for this position is NC11 (Salary Range: $41,429 - $72,500). State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as, or lower than, their current position. If selected for this position, a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience, funding availability, and internal equity. Based upon these factors, a pay increase MAY result.

About Central Prison*:
Central Prison in Raleigh, NC has been in continuous service since 1884. It serves as the admission point into prison for adult male felons sentenced to 20 years or more and is the main medical and mental health center for male offenders. It also houses special populations, including death row and safe-keepers.

While security requires that certain offenders remain in their cells, there are more than 260 offender job assignments that include working in the kitchen, laundry or canteen. Offenders also work as barbers, janitors and clerks.

Offenders can attend substance abuse group therapy meetings, Bible studies or worship services.

To qualify for this position, applicants must document on the application that they possess ALL of the following: *

Documented supervisory skills in a prison facility.

  • Documented knowledge of Prisons’ Policy and Procedures.
  • Documented report writing skills.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma AND three years of experience as a Correctional Sergeant, or two years of experience as a Correctional Sergeant III; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Qualifications*: Must be eligible for certification by the N.C. Criminal Justice Education and Training and Standards Commission.
