Community Health Program Assistant Job at Black Girls With Green Thumbs
ORGANIZATIONAL BACKGROUND
Founded in 2016, Black Girls With Green Thumbs (BGWGT) is a community-based organization focused on urban gardening and community engagement. Through gardening workshops, online engagement, and community programming, Black Girls With Green Thumbs is growing a community who garden in their homes and within their communities to heal, nourish, and learn. BGWGT promotes health literacy in a way that is culturally competent and accessible meeting community members where they are, online and within their neighborhoods, and inviting them to new experiences like home gardening, plant-based cooking, and even health-inspired getaways.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Program Assistant will support the implementation of several grant-funded programs, including Green Thumbs In Your Community and Green Thumbs In Your School.
Green Thumbs In Your School teaches school-aged children about gardening, healthy food choices, and plant-based cooking. Green Thumbs In Your School couples these concepts to connect the process of soil to table to school-age students. Through current school partnerships, Black Girls With Green Thumbs offers an inclusive, hands-on, educational experience to children and youth who require developmental and behavioral support within the School District of Philadelphia.
This position will support program directors with a number of tasks including, but not limited to program facilitation, garden-bed building, and community outreach. Gardening experience and basic knowledge of plants is preferred. The candidate should be reliable and take direction well.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Promotes health through nutrition by implementing and teaching nutrition techniques and programs in community and school settings
- Maintain updated schedule, record-keeping, and program evaluation reporting, as needed
- Assist with the building and/or maintenance of raised-bed gardens at local libraries and schools
- Participate in bi-weekly program activities (facilitation, gardening, walking, etc.) at various Philadelphia area locations
- Lead a small group of people on topics related to urban gardening and light physical activity
- Assist with program promotion via social media, neighborhood canvassing and/or community meeting attendance
- Work with leadership team to maintain strong and positive relationships with program partners
Competency Categories and Requirements
- At least one year experience educating youth or adult populations about wellness (nutrition; gardening; physical activity; mental health, etc.)
- Experience working with special needs populations, preferred
- Garden experience, preferred
- Love for all things “green” and passion for community work
- Ability to work effectively as a part of a team, as well as independently
- Basic understanding of social media management and eye for design
- Strong work ethic, with attention to detail
- Must be punctual
Candidates MUST possess excellent work ethic and common sense. Must be detailed, time-efficient, focused, responsible, friendly and contribute to the pleasant day of team and program participants.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand/walk for extended periods of time
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50lbs.
