Job Summary:*

Provides housing-focused case management to a caseload of 15-20 at-risk of homelessness/homeless San Diego State students. Works with housing locators to identify appropriate and sustainable housing for students. Assesses students for self-sufficiency, provides client-centered housing plans, develops realistic budgets, and links students to long-term community resources. Assists with collecting housing documents, provides housing navigation and location, advocates for students with landlords/property managers, and ensures stable housing placement. This position requires monitoring post-placement and aftercare support. Attends biweekly meetings with SDSU Housing Stability Case Manager, case conference meetings, represents the agency at community meetings, and participates in required training. This position requires coordination and close collaboration with San Diego State University.

Duties & Responsibilities:*

  • Provides housing navigation and housing case management support for students experiencing homelessness/ at-risk of homelessness. within the San Diego State University Rapid Rehousing program.
  • Work one-on-one with the students to develop and set individualized personal housing and educational goals for long-term sustainability and successful graduation from SDSU.
  • Collaborates with SDSU using a holistic approach to support students through a crisis by leveraging a coordinated and collaborative approach that utilizes on and off-campus partnerships.
  • Communicate with individuals from a person-centered, trauma-informed care approach using motivational interviewing to evaluate, assess and determine the extent of service/support needed for each individual.
  • Conducts assessments to develop a realistic and comprehensive budget for long-term financial stability.
  • Assists students with completion of applications and comprehension of lease terms.
  • Develops and manages existing relationships with property managers, provides mediation and advocacy for participants with landlord/property managers and works with landlords to reduce/eliminate barriers.
  • Assists participants in locating, applying, placing, and retaining appropriate housing.
  • Negotiates lease terms, utility deposits, security deposits, and move-in fees.
  • Assisting with the move-in process, helping participants obtain needed household items and other tasks related to maintaining their own independent living.
  • Maintains client case records, enters data into HMIS, and assists with reporting requirements.
  • Provides aftercare services and linkage to other support services to prepare students for a successful transition post-graduation.
  • Attends agency, program, and collaborative bi-weekly meetings with SDSU Housing Stability Coordinator.
  • Other duties assigned.

Qualifications:*

  • Must be vaccinated from Covid-19.
  • Undergraduate degree required in social work, social services, or related field.
  • Minimum of 1 year working or volunteering with underserved populations.
  • Must submit to a background check via Live Scan (with ongoing alerts), as required by specific programs, funding requirements and licensing regulations.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record.
  • Must demonstrate ability to be culturally sensitive and respect diversity.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with exceptional problem-solving skills

  • Reading and typing on a computer frequently.
  • Sitting for long periods of time at required meetings or in supervision.
  • Daily traveling in car to meet with clients and attend agency and community meetings.

  • Office space may be shared with frequent telephone and visitor contacts.
  • Frequent travel to meet with clients, landlords, and other providers.
  • Collaborating with different internal staff and traveling to various Home Start locations.
