Fort Ross Conservancy Job Posting Job title: Coastal Naturalist Reports to: Director of Programs Charon Vilnai Fort Ross Conservancy (FRC) is hiring a new Coastal Naturalist. This is a 32-hr per week full-time, exempt position. Salary will be based on experience, and have potential for growth. Benefits include health insurance, holidays, vacation days, and sick leave. Fort Ross Conservancy (FRC) is a public charity 501(c)(3) whose mission is to promote educational, environmental, and interpretive activities at Fort Ross State Historic Park and Salt Point State Park. Fort Ross Conservancy stewards over 9,000 acres of the rugged Sonoma Coast which includes the site of a historic fortress occupied from 1812 to 1841 by the Russian-American Company. Qualifications: A good candidate will be comfortable working outdoors, year-round, in the Fort Ross State Historic Park and Salt Point State Park coastal environments (coastal bluffs, beaches, tidepools, redwood forest), and they will excel at working with diverse groups of all ages. Applicants should have formal training in relevant natural history fields, such as environmental science, marine biology and other earth sciences, and should have three or more years of experience teaching natural history, with a marine ecology focus. A strong candidate will have experience in grant writing and outreach, and will have excellent oral and written communication skills. Applicants should work well independently and on a small team, and they will be enthusiastic about connecting people of all ages with the environment, and sharing their knowledge in meaningful, interactive ways. Duties include: ● Work with students of all ages, teaching Fort Ross Conservancy’s Marine Ecology Program (Rocky Intertidal, Marine Mammal Identification); create and teach new curriculum as needed, such as a lesson on kelp forest and restoration. ● Offer hands-on interpretation and instruction for school groups, families, and adults on a wide variety of natural history walks, talks, tours and programs at Fort Ross and Salt Point, such as birding, tidepooling, marine mammal monitoring, wildflower and medicinal plants, geology and the San Andreas Fault, etc. ● Work with the Director of Programs to lead and expand the Sea Lion Survey project; coordinate and train volunteers; oversee data collection, update and maintain the project database through data entry; share data with California Department of Fish & Wildlife and The Marine Mammal Center. ● Lead the Harbor Seal Survey project in partnership with Point Reyes National Seashore; coordinate volunteers for seasonal surveys (pupping season); provide and coordinate volunteer training; oversee data sharing with Point Reyes National Seashore. ● Attend the Greater Farallones Association LiMPETS (Long-Term Monitoring Program and Experiential Training for Students) training to become a certified LiMPETS instructor; teach LiMPETS classes to students in the Fort Ross tidepools. ● Assist the Greater Farallones Association’s scientific work on Sonoma Coast kelp recovery by organizing community meetings and outreach to ensure the public has a voice in the restoration project; create kelp-related social media content to promote the project. ● Write natural history articles for the FRC monthly newsletter. ● Expand natural history content on the FRC website. ● Assist California State Parks Natural Resource team in coordinating viola adunca botanical surveys and Behren’s Silverspot butterfly surveys. ● Assist Executive Director in writing grants pertaining to natural history, resource management, and outdoor education.
