Child & Family Victim Advocate

Job Description

General Duties:

The Child/Victim Advocate is responsible for promoting a child friendly, supportive environment at the Child Advocacy Center by providing crisis support, system information, and community resources for children and their families who participate in an investigation of child abuse or for children who have witnessed traumatic and violent crime. This position will also be trained to be a forensic interviewer providing quality, neutral, non-leading interviews for child victims of abuse and neglect.

Responsibilities:

Child & Family Victim Advocate

o Provide victims and their non-offending family members with support, information, and referrals to other agencies for appropriate assistance from initial contact through disposition

o Provide technical and operational support for multidisciplinary team members before, during, and after forensic interviews and medical exams of victims

o Develop and coordinate ongoing support services to be offered or provided through the CAC

o Participate as an active member of the multidisciplinary team

o Attendance and participation in monthly MDT meetings

o Enter data and maintain client tracking system(s)

o Participate in ongoing training as needed

o Serve as a liaison between the CAC and other partner agencies as needed

Forensic Interviewing

o Quickly build rapport with children and youth

o Conduct non-leading, neutral, legally sound forensic interviews.

o Coordination and work cooperatively with the investigators/multidisciplinary team members

o Attend Child Forensic Interview training and participation in regular ongoing training to keep current on research and skills regarding child forensic interviewing

o Understand and maintain confidentiality standards

o Attendance and participation in monthly MDT meetings

o Testify during legal proceedings when subpoenaed

Required Qualifications and Skills

o Bachelor’s degree in human services, psychology, sociology, education, or criminal justice (negotiable) or adequate experience that supports this position.

o Excellent oral and written communication skills

o Advanced computer skills and experience

o Ability to be flexible with work schedule

o Knowledge or willingness to learn about child abuse and neglect issues, child development and family dynamics of child abuse

  • Knowledge or willingness to learn about the legal and child protection systems
  • Willing to attend child abuse and victim service related training and victim advocacy training

o Ability to be a team player

  • Highly motivated, task orientated, independent worker
  • Reliable transportation
  • Ability to pass a background check

Preferred Skills

o Experience with prevention, investigation, and treatment of child abuse or related civil and criminal processes supervised by the Executive Director.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $19.00 - $21.00 per hour
