POSITION SUMMARY:

The Chief Advanced Care Practitioner (ACP) will support the physician assistants and nurse practitioners operating within the Department of Psychiatry’s outpatient department, including the specialty programs, which currently include the addiction clinic (APTP) and psychosis clinic (WRAP) as well as future specialty programs within the outpatient area, through important functions such as recruiting and hiring new staff, training new staff, helping to coordinate ongoing medical education of the staff, scheduling and interacting with the physician staff and hospital around the roles and optimal professional development of the ACP staff.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:

The Chief ACP will have supervisory responsibilities supporting a group of physician assistants and nurse practitioners who provide care in our outpatient clinic. The Chief ACP will have both the clinical responsibilities of the clinical position as well as administrative duties, including:

Clinical:

  • Provides direct care, counseling, and teaching to patients and families according to established collaborative protocols and standards of care. This candidate should have Suboxone license and should feel comfortable prescribing this medication.
  • Sets priorities for appropriate and efficient management of patient care that reflects cost effective management of time, available human resources, supplies, and equipment.
  • Performs physical examinations and provides preventive health measures within prescribed guidelines and appropriate to patient needs.
  • Orders, interprets, and evaluates appropriate lab and diagnostic tests to assess patient's clinical problems and health care needs.
  • Based on outcome of diagnostic, lab, and physical assessment findings, arranges for appropriate plan of care and follow-up.
  • Records pertinent patient care findings in the medical record.
  • Maintains interdisciplinary approach to planning and communicating patient care information by discussing patient data with appropriate physicians and other health care professionals.
  • Evaluates outcomes of patient care and makes necessary revisions in care plan.
  • Seeks and provides consultative services as required.
  • Through patient education and counseling, incorporates the concepts of health maintenance, prevention, and promotion into daily practice.
  • Demonstrates awareness of community resources and assists staff, patients, and families to effectively utilize them.
  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age groups of patients regularly served.
  • Notifies supervisor when patients in age groups not regularly served present, and seeks assistance from individuals with the knowledge of the specialized needs of such patient age groups.

Administrative duties:

  • Serves as clinical resource for staff through consultation, formal and informal education, review of literature and participation in seminars and conferences. Ensures that staff meets mandatory training and licensing requirements.
  • Participate in the planning of the ACP-specific educational activities
  • Addresses behavioral issues and adverse interpersonal interactions involving the ACP staff.
  • Supervises the assigned staff, including interviewing, conducting orientation, training and assisting in performance evaluations; responsible for recruiting, hiring, training, and evaluating new staff.
  • Supports the process for tracking absenteeism, hours worked, leaves and vacation/sick time for the Department.
  • Prepares performance evaluations in conjunction with supervising physicians.
  • Maintains patients and employee confidentiality.
  • Utilizes Boston Medical Center’s values as the basis for decision making in order to facilitate the department and the hospital’s missions and goals.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Must Have:

7+ years of experience as a PA or NP with some supervisory experience

Mastery of clinical skills required of the Psychiatry ACPs

Preference for those with bilingual fluency

Leadership ability
