Haverford College seeks a new Director of the Gender Resources and Sexuality Equity (GRASE) Center, a key member of the Student Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (SDEI) Office within the Division of Institutional Diversity, Equity, and Access (IDEA). Reporting to the Associate Dean of the College for SDEI,, the GRASE Center Director will work alongside the members of the SDEI Office, which include The John P. Chesick Scholars Program for First-Generation/Low-Income Students, The Marilou Allen Office of Service and Community Collaboration, The Office of International Student Support, The Office of Race and Ethnicity Education, and The Office of Religious and Spiritual Life/Quaker Affairs. GRASE actively engages in an intersectional feminist model of empowerment to promote women’s rights, redress both historic and contemporary inequalities, and recognize the achievements and struggles of women and gender expansive people across the world.
The Director is charged with creating a holistic, student-centered environment that cultivates community and belonging, provides resources for students’ personal and academic success, and connects students to opportunities for campus engagement. The GRASE Director will foster a positive, supportive, and inclusive community for women, femme, gender expansive people, and LGBTQIA+ students; provide leadership for developing, implementing, facilitating, and assessing programming, training, initiatives, and resources that address students’ needs, interests, and concerns related to gender and sexuality equity; and advance Haverford’s commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, access, and antiracism. The Director will work in close collaboration with a broad range of individuals, offices, divisions, student interns, and constituencies; mentor young adults from a wide range of backgrounds; and respond to new opportunities and challenges with wisdom, knowledge, creativity, grace, and a good sense of humor. The GRASE Director should possess a strong understanding of the complexities of navigating institutions of higher education; stay current with trends in higher education as they relate to equity, inclusion, diversity, and access initiatives, practices, and policies; and expand and maintain Haverford’s membership and participation in related collegiate and professional organizations.
Primary Responsibilities
- Implement and supervise of the mission of the GRASE Center by enhancing and enriching the co-curricular life of students by establishing relationships with all students and facilitating programs in collaboration with students, employees of the college, and the administration
- Support the College’s affinity and gender and sexuality-based student organizations through active advising, program development, and advocacy
- Manage the Center’s budget and the annual assessment and planning processes
- Advise the College’s Queer House (QHouse) residential community and manage their annual application processes
- Supervise and meet regularly with GRASE Interns; support the teams’ programming initiatives and contribute to their leadership and professional development
- Serve as a resource and liaison to the campus community, community partners, families, and alumni regarding supporting LGBTQIA+, gender expansive people, women, and femme students and other related topics and issues
- Connect students to support structures and resources within the College, and the surrounding communities
Community Engagement and Programming
- Through active community engagement, programs, and partnerships contribute to the leadership development and well-being of students who identify as LGBTQIA+, gender expansive people, women, and femme students
- In partnership with GRASE interns, LGBTQIA+, gender expansive people, women, and femme identity-based student organizations, and divisional colleagues, develop robust LGBTQIA+ cultural heritage month programming including LGBTQIA History Month in October and Campus Pride Month in April
- Collaborate with other members of the Dean’s Division as well as affiliated offices and centers on campus to plan and co-sponsor initiatives supporting Haverford College’s LGTBQIA+, gender expansive people, women, and femme students
- Serve as a member of committees, advisory groups, and task forces for large initiatives to advocate on behalf of LGBTQIA+, gender expansive people, women, and femme students, as well as instruct on issues they face and other related topics and strategic initiatives
Education
- Plan and develop educational workshops, training, and events for the College’s First-Year orientation and residential education programs
- In partnership with Haverford College’s Title IX Office and Health Services, as well as student organizations, provide educational programs and activities related to healthy relationships and advocacy
- Design and implement an array of educational programs, workshops, and campus-wide training for faculty, staff, students, and community members that 1) expand our knowledge and understanding of gender and sexuality, and the critical issues facing LGTBQIA+, women, and femme students; 2) provide trauma informed and healing centered framework for institutional, classroom-based, and campus-wide support of LGTBQIA+, gender expansive people, women, and femme individuals; 3) cultivate a sense of belonging, honor, and celebrate Haverford’s LGTBQIA+, women, and femme individuals and their many contributions; and 4) center LGTBQIA+, women, and femme individuals, their voices, and experiences
Advancement of the work of the SDEI team
- Contribute to the creation and fulfillment of the SDEI Team’s goals and vision
- Engage in team meetings, workshops, strategic planning, and other facets of the SDEI team’s work
- Collaborate with colleagues in the creation, implementation, and evaluation of intersectional campus-wide and DEI-focused programming and resources
- Support the work of THRIVE and its initiatives
- Design programming, workshops, initiatives, and opportunities focused on equity, anti-racism, intersectionality, and social justice
- Share best practices, resources, and supportive networks
- Other tasks as assigned
Line of Report: The Director of GRASE reports to the Associate Dean of the College, Student Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.
Work Location: This position will be eligible for a hybrid work schedule, pursuant to the College’s Work Location Policy. There is a minimum of four days per week on campus.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree
- Three years of professional work experience in gender, LGBTQIA+, and diversity
- Experience working effectively and sensitively with vulnerable and structurally oppressed populations and their intersecting identities such as youth and students, people of color, low-income, first-generation college students, people with disabilities, immigrants, and undocumented individuals
Professional Competencies
- Excellent communication skills
- Experience managing budgets
- Excellent time management and prioritization skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and effectively handle sensitive and personal information with respect and discretion
- Proficiency in Microsoft Suite and Google Suite applications
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree
- Experience in higher education and understanding of overarching institutional frameworks and histories in supporting the work of students, faculty, staff, and administration
- Experience with event management

- PA Act 153 clearances: Ability to obtain and maintain PA Act 153 background checks
