Cemetery Superintendent Job at Sunset Memorial Park
The Cemetery Superintendent reports to the General Manager and is responsible for keeping the cemetery grounds and parks in excellent condition, increasing our ability to attract customers. The Cemetery Superintendent must manage the Grounds employees to ensure that grounds upkeep is performed in a timely, cost-effective manner. Fostering a strong team environment is critical to the success of this role.
Essential Functions and Competencies
- Organize and supervise the work of the grounds staff daily which includes: laying out grave sites and preparing them for burials (following Interment Verification procedures,) setting memorials and markers, performing lawn maintenance such as mowing, trimming, planting and snow removal, collecting trash or other debris from the grounds
- Recruit and manage performance of grounds staff
- Inspect all paperwork on burial and memorial orders to ensure information is correct and proper directions are given Observe safety rules and train staff in safe operating procedures on an ongoing basis to ensure compliance of operating procedures with corporate, federal, state and local regulations, including OSHA regulations and Safety and Environmental guidelines
- Perform a daily visual inspection of the grounds to identify areas that have been damaged and/or require maintenance
- Control grounds expenditures through proper maintenance, early identification of problems and efficient staff management
- Maintain and direct others to maintain equipment and tools
- Perform special projects that may include building drains, development of grave spaces and larger sections of land
- Work with and coordinate services with colleagues
- Address and resolve client inquiries regarding interments – layout and preparation
- Any other duties as directed by management
Required Education and Experience
- Minimum 3 years of supervisory experience
- High school education with 5 –10 years of relevant work experience required (Cemetery maintenance experience preferred but not required)
- Operate Heavy Machinery including loader/ backhoe
- Valid Driver's license
- Valid Pesticide applicators license (if applicable for state or province)
- Familiar with property management safety procedures and regulations
- Good communication skills
- Problem solving skills
- Detail oriented
