Behavioral Support Specialist/Direct Support Professional (DSP) Job at Compass Maryland

A 53-year-old man with intellectual disability who lives in his own apartment in Ellicott City is looking for caring, compassionate, and supportive Behavioral Support Specialist/Direct Support Professionals that have awareness and understanding of Tourette’ syndrome and can assist him with his activities in the evenings Mon-Fri 4p-8p. These activities may include managing his Tourette’s (reminding to use breathing techniques, etc.), assisting with anxiety and implementing a behavior support plan and helping him find places to volunteer where he can help others, helping him with his goals of eating healthy (moving away from processed foods) and quitting smoking. Additionally, assisting with activities and interests that he enjoys such as going places in the community, and going on outdoor walks/nature walks although he has an unsteady gait and may need assistance on uneven terrain. He also enjoys swimming, cooking, working with his hands, creating art, and helping others (elderly) with carrying groceries and other items. He does not like crowded places but finds peace being out in nature. He may also require reminders to complete daily activities and needs assistance with medical appointments, medication, menu planning, meal preparation and cleaning.

This is a perfect position for someone in school for psychology, social work or other areas of human services. The ideal staff would be someone who shares these same interests and can help him explore and further develop these interests.

Positions/schedules available:

Mon – Fri 4p-8p – 20 hours a week.

Pay rate: $22/hour

Benefits: 401K retirement plan with generous employer match, time and half on holidays, paid time off, free meals while on shift, mileage reimbursement. Depending on number of hours a week, benefits may also include health, dental, and vision insurance.

Paid Training: CMT, Mandt, RBT, DDA core training as needed.

Requirements: Certification as a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) and Medication Technician (CMT) as well as certified in the Mandt System or willingness and ability to become certified within 30 days of employment. Training will be provided. Must be CPR FA certified prior to starting. Must have understanding and knowledge of Tourette’s syndrome. Two years prior experience supporting people with IDD and behavioral needs. Associates degree or completion of two years of college coursework, preferably in human services or related field, or combination of commensurate experience and high school diploma. Must have own reliable vehicle, driver’s license with clean driving record. Must be able to utilize computer technology to complete all documentation requirements. Ideal candidates would someone who can assist with smoking cessation and someone who shares interest and ability in cooking healthy meals and someone who has other shared interests (nature, art, etc.) as described above.
