Role Overview:

Self Help is seeking an Assistant General Counsel to join our legal team. The Assistant General Counsel will be a member of the Legal Team with responsibility for regulatory and compliance matters for Self-Help Credit Union and Self-Help Federal Credit Union. The position will also supervise members of the Compliance Team, which provides operational and technical support on compliance with consumer financial regulations across both credit unions. Additional Legal Team responsibilities will include other compliance, regulatory, and transactional matters, depending on the skills and interests of the successful candidate.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Oversee analysis of statutes and regulations to ensure that both credit unions comply with established standards while protecting members and credit union assets.
  • Identify and address areas of significant compliance risk and evaluate overall effectiveness of operations.
  • Coordinate and supervise the review and analysis of federal regulatory compliance efforts.
  • Implement compliance program and plan to ensure consistent practice across two credit unions.
  • Identify existing and new issues pertaining to compliance with state and federal regulations to ensure necessary policies, strategies, and procedures are implemented.
  • Act as a subject matter expert with operational units to ensure regulatory compliance to facilitate, improve, and strengthen operations.
  • Keep senior leadership and operational units apprised of compliance status and regulatory updates.
  • Supervise Compliance Team Leader and set performance goals, assignments, and standards to ensure objectives.
  • Oversee the work of team members to ensure timely delivery of quality services.
  • Select, coach, assess, and develop team members.
  • Collect, compile, and prepare reports and data for management decision-making.
  • Guide Compliance Team as it supports staff to comply with all applicable statutory requirements and policies, procedures, rules, regulations, and values.
  • Provide legal support to other teams within Self-Help as needed, which may include general business advice, guidance on home mortgage lending, mortgage loan purchase agreements, and other secondary market transactions.
  • Act as a change agent to drive Self-Help’s economic inclusion initiatives by integrating supplier diversity and the use of businesses owned by women and people of color in third-party contracting and vendor management for relevant products and services.
  • Perform other duties as may be deemed necessary.

Credentials, Experience, and Skills:

  • Juris Doctor degree and member of the Bar in state where located.
  • 4+ years of experience in financial services compliance or regulations.
  • Ability to interpret and apply legislative and regulatory compliance requirements, preferably in a financial institution setting.
  • Ability to analyze highly complex concepts and articulate logical, coherent, workable solutions and procedures.
  • Expert planning, organizational, project management, and problem-solving skills.
  • Expert analytical and reasoning skills.
  • Advanced interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Advanced skill in dealing tactfully with all levels of staff and leadership.
  • Ability to take initiative, apply good judgment, and make sound decisions.
  • Ability to work in an environment that places priority on teamwork and collaboration.
  • Ability to create strong relationships across multiple types of difference, and to thrive in a diverse and inclusive team environment.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience in working with financial institution regulators or examiners.
  • Practical supervisory experience.
  • Familiarity with lending (consumer and mortgage) laws and regulations, and other consumer-related compliance laws and regulations.
  • Working knowledge of Verafin or other compliance software.
  • Curiosity and ability to adapt.

Oakland, CA Salary Range*: $110,500 - $143,808.08
