Associate Director of Stewardship and Advancement Research

The Office of Advancement and Alumni Relations seeks a team player to join a dynamic office for a leading independent school. The individual should have a commitment to the school's mission, a passion for education, enjoy multitasking, and have the talent and ability to effectively work with colleagues, parents, alumni, and other members of the Dalton community. This is an in-person position.

Development Responsibilities

  • Perform research on individuals, foundations, and corporations using a wide variety of biographical, organizational, and financial sources, including Raiser’s Edge, online database services, websites, library and governmental sources, and other external repositories of public information.
  • Analyze and synthesize accumulated information to assess financial capacity, philanthropic tendencies, and interests at Dalton.
  • Write profiles, biographies, and briefings for the use of the Head of School, Advancement Team, and volunteers.
  • Implement new research techniques as they arise, striving to design the ultimate prospect research methodology.
  • Monitor updates and news about key community members and communicate those updates to applicable departments; apply those updates to existing research.
  • Assist as a member of the Advancement team in projects and events of the Advancement/Alumni office (some evenings required)

Stewardship Responsibilities

  • Liaise with all endowed fund holders who have established endowed funds or with those who have contributed a leadership gift to a specific area or added to an existing endowed fund that year.
  • Provide annual letter and/or email stating the funds’ activity including, but not limited to: financial information with market values, interest spending rate and amount allocated for the corresponding fiscal year.

Current school information (tuition, enrollment, financial aid)Updated information pertaining to the area of interest. Any additional information requested/required by the person or foundation

  • Work with the Business Office to ensure funds are being spent appropriately/accurately before reporting.
  • Liaise with faculty department heads to gather information for reporting to donors interested in specific areas of funding (i.e. CSE, Math, Student Activities, Language, etc).
  • Identify opportunities to engage emerging donor groups: young alumni, international alumni, etc. and coordinate with appropriate departments to implement.
  • Collaborate on development of digital and print communication opportunities to connect with donors.
  • Complete applications to different grant-making organizations supporting Dalton and report annually to these foundations.
  • Ensure that all newly endowed funds are added to the current reporting structure.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Research, stewardship, advancement, or alumni relations experience preferred
  • Excellent communication skills (i.e., strong writing and proofreading skills). Candidates must be comfortable communicating with staff, faculty, administrators, parents, board members, and endowed fund holders in the school community.
  • Strong project management and problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated proficiency using Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Google Drive, and other PC and Mac based applications. Raiser’s Edge experience preferred.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality while working with sensitive information
  • Prior independent school or higher education experience preferred
  • Sense of humor and curiosity are a must!
