Description

The Associate Director of Activities and Director of Outdoor Adventures will be responsible for assisting the Associate Director of Summer Camps in oversite of cadet activities (on-site and off-site), school year outdoor adventure club, and fully supervising the summer adventure camp programs. Further this position will be responsible for recruiting and training all outdoor adventure camp staff. Providing oversite to key events that the Academy sponsors will be included in the scope of duties. This position should agree to uphold the mission and enforce the core values of the Academy while conducting duties.

Essential Job Functions

Supervisory Responsibilities:

• Oversee and train the Outdoor Adventure Camp staff members
• Coordinate travel, travel schedules, and track budgetary spending
• Report stats, enrollment, attendance, spending and revenue to the Director of Summer Programs and Associate Director of Summer Camps
• Research and propose activities for participation that would be adventurous, educational, and beneficial to Cadets
• Propose and assist in researching new revenue lines
• Research and implement a training curriculum, inclusive of leadership roles, protocol, and program for training of Outdoor Adventure Staff
• Oversee and direct staff participation and coordination of chaperones during the academic year or as needed while Outdoor Adventure Camp Staff is present
• Assist in the oversight of Outdoor Adventure Camp Participants
• Assist in supervising trips as required by Academy necessity

Duties/Responsibilities:

• Recruit, train, and oversee summer trip leaders and support staff personnel
• Oversee the inventory, upkeep, and storage of equipment/supplies and facility needs for activities and camps
• Assist the Director of Summer Programs in planning and event set-up of activities and summer programs
• Create outdoor adventure programs, including revisions of current curriculum guides and resources, for all activities and summer programs
• Conduct after-action review with Trip Counselors at the completion of each Outdoor Adventure Activity
• Assist Outdoor Adventure Staff members with program development and safety management skills
• Facilitate behavior management amongst camp participants
• Effectively communicate with Outdoor Adventure Staff, parents, students, and camp participants on a routine basis
• Maintains full enrollment for all activities and camps
• Collaborate with the Director of Marketing and Director of Communications to promote and maintain full enrollment in all Outdoor Adventure Activities and Camps
• Additional duties may be assigned as deemed necessary

Required Skills/Abilities:

• Must be able to communicate verbally and through written communication with staff, faculty, parents, and the general public per the policies and procedures of the Academy
• Must be able to work in a collaborative environment, with small teams, and independently
• Needs to be able to problem solve and multitask coordination during activities, camps, and events
• Must be proficient in Microsoft Suite
• Must be trainable regarding commonly used software
• Hours of work may be conditionally flexible during events, or as determined necessary for check-in and check-out seasons
• Must be enthusiastic for outdoor adventure trips, education, and for supporting a diverse community
• Must have experience in the outdoors
• A focus on watersports or backcountry adventures is preferred

Education and Experience:

• A. or B.S. in a related field, or at least 4 years of prior experience in education or outdoor leadership
• Minimum 2 years of experience with staff supervision and program logistics
• Minimum 2 years of experience working with and teaching 7th-12th graders in experiential education, outdoor, or residential settings
• Minimum 2 years of experience leading multi-week outdoor adventure trip
• Minimum 2 years of experience leading multi-day kayaking trips (white water preferred)
• Must hold or be able to obtain a Wilderness First Responder Certification within 90 days
  • Must work to become a Wilderness First Responder Instructor
  • Must work to become a Swift Water Rescue Instructor
• Must hold or work to become Lifeguarding Instructor
• Minimum 2 years of experience conducting Risk Management preferred
• PCIA or AGMA certification preferred

Physical Requirements:

• Must successfully pass a background check and participate in random drug testing
• Ability to climb up to three flights of stairs as necessary
• Ability to push, pull, lift, or carry up to 100 pounds as deemed necessary
• Ability to hike in various environments and conditions for extended periods of time
• Ability to swim in or out of swift water currents
• Ability to paddle, or use various physical motor skills, for extended periods of time
• Ability to scale natural barriers while utilizing safety equipment
• Ability to use arms over head or extended, sit, stand, stoop, twist, kneel, or squat as needed
• Prolonged periods of standing, sitting, or working on a project as deemed necessary
• Prolonged periods of time in the outdoor elements during all seasons
• Prolonged periods of time sitting at a desk and working on a computer
