Summary
The Assistant Manager is responsible for overseeing security operations, as well as managing, scheduling, training and assessing the performance of security personnel. This role is responsible for conducting internal investigations when necessary and ensuring that exceptional guest service is provided by security staff while maintaining a safe and secure environment at the Convention Center.
MANAGE SECURITY DEPARTMENT AND BUILDING SECURITY. Manage overall building security at all times:
- Disseminates department/company policy information and ensures compliance by Security Supervisors. Makes recommendations to Manager, Security and Guest Services of potential policy improvements.
- Provides day-to-day management of Security Supervisors, HPD Special Duty and Fire Department personnel to meet the needs of the venue and client(s). Ensures Security Supervisors are appropriately managing security officers, parking attendants and contract labor (which may include traffic control officers, elevator operators, HPD Special Duty staff and cashiers) so that the shift provides a safe and secure environment at the Hawai‘i Convention Center. Manages assigned security staff to ensure all are properly uniformed, equipped and prepared to perform assigned security & guest services duties.
- Creates and manages labor schedules and attendance.
- Conducts performance evaluations of staff.
- Reports violations to company and/or department policies to Manager, upper management and/or Human Resources. Schedule meetings accordingly to review staff performance and to discuss necessary action(s). Provide documentation and recommendations, which may include disciplinary action or termination of employment.
- Approves all reports submitted by Security Supervisors to ensure accuracy of content. Assigns staff to investigate and submit appropriate and accurate reports of incidences. Disseminates reports to executive management and/or other staff to ensure awareness of security issues. Manages department tracking system of all incident reports.
- Properly monitors pertinent information from management concerning departments, duties or current events and communicates information to staff as needed.
- Investigates and resolves any cash handling issues reported by Security Supervisors.
- Conducts frequent inspections of building and security posts.
- As part of the Security and Guest Services department, may need to perform patrolling duties or shift/post relief to assist direct and indirect reports.
- Operates, monitors, and inspects all security equipment throughout the facility to ensure the venue obtains optimum efficiency levels.
- Investigates and seeks resolution of client issues regarding security, transportation, and parking matters.
- Conducts periodic inspections of safety equipment throughout the building.
- Regularly monitors radio, telephone and video of security base to ensure proper security response is effected as required.
- Assists in providing regular safety training to staff.
EMERGENCY EVACUATIONS AND CRISIS SCENARIOS: Manages and/or assists in Emergency Evacuation and Crisis Scenario situations, practices and drills.
- Manages emergency when Manager is absent. Assists in the management of emergencies when Manager is present.
- Acts as first responder.
- Ensures smooth training of participants in preparation of true evacuations and/or crises. Successfully participates in drills to test knowledge and practicality of evacuation/emergency procedures; conducts inspections of areas and reports to security base the status of the emergency.
- Conducts periodic inspections of fire extinguishers, safety equipment and supplies.
- May administer CPR/AED or First Aid as needed during emergency and/or crisis situations.
- Investigates all incidents as assigned.
TRANSPORTATION PROGRAM:
- Manages venue transportation program so that transportation during events run smoothly to provide exceptional customer service to client(s). This may include freight, taxis, buses, passenger vehicles and/or pedestrians.
- Chairs quarterly meetings with transportation representatives and company departments to set forth procedures for upcoming events, discuss outstanding items and/or any other pertinent information regarding transportation in and around the venue.
- Monitors all transportation operating procedures and recommend updates, changes, and revisions. Communicate procedures to necessary parties to ensure compliance.
FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT:
- Creates/develops, maintains and manages respective department budget. Documents, tracks, monitors, and analyzes departmental finances. Reports finances/budge, reforecasts and provides recommendations for financial strategy of departmental expenses to Operations department.
CONTRACT LABOR:
- Collaborates with Management during RFP process for Contract Labor provider. May advise on contract content.
- Manages contract labor schedule. This includes, but is not limited to, submitting labor requests and ensuring labor provider complies with the requests.
- Maintains successful working relationship with vendor; holds regular meetings to discuss successes/challenges.
- Manages contract labor costs in budget.
- Required Qualifications (Job Knowledge, Skills, and Education):
- A minimum education level of: BA/BS Degree (4-year) in Criminal Justice or related area
- A minimum of 3-4 years of related work experience
- State of Hawai‘i Board of Private Security Certification
- Demonstrated ability to follow departmental and company procedures accurately and efficiently.
- Able to inspect equipment with a high level of detail.
- Maintains a professional, positive and friendly demeanor/attitude
- Excellent customer service, listening and communication skills
- Experience with defusing and resolving situations with patrons/customers, demonstrating the ability to communicate clearly specific instructions and explanations.
- Must be able to remain in an extended stationary position for entire shift (8-10 hours).
- Must be able to walk, run or move quickly to respond to emergency situations.
- Must be able to work varied shifts, weekdays, weekends, holidays and additional hours as venue schedule requires.
- First Aid, CPR/AED Certification. Able to proficiently operate life safety systems and maintain solid working knowledge of emergency procedures.
- Proficient in report writing.
- Maintain a working knowledge of security and transportation processes and best practices
- Proficient with Microsoft Office.
- Strong leadership skills.
- Must have the ability to work harmoniously in a team setting exhibiting the “Aloha Spirit” to fellow workers, guests, clients and the community so as to provide exceptional customer service while demonstrating behaviors that reflect the Hawai‘i Convention Center’s vision, mission statement and values.
