Annex Library Assistant II Job at The University of Iowa
The University of Iowa Libraries is seeking to fill the Annex Library Assistant position at the Library Assistant II (GB27/Paygrade 08) classification. Reporting to the Library Annex Coordinator, this position provides timely access to collection materials to patrons from the University of Iowa community, the state of Iowa, and beyond. This includes retrieving and processing materials for physical item and scanning requests, as well as processing and ingesting material moved to the University of Iowa Libraries’ offsite storage facility, the Libraries Annex.
Cooperation and clear communication with supervisor and other libraries staff is essential. Work must be completed accurately, courteously, and in a timely manner.
Job Duties:
40% Responsible for lifting, transporting, sorting by size, scanning and shelving books held in 10 different trays, based on size:
- Books awaiting processing must be moved to the workroom for ingestion.
- Uses a hand scanner to place a duplicate barcode on the back of items.
- Items are assigned one of 10 size designations using a sizing tool and placed in trays accordingly.
- Affixes a barcode on each tray, using a configuration based on the size of the contents.
- Scanning includes inputting information by scanning the barcode of each volume and the barcode of its assigned tray in with a handheld scanner to accurately update each volume’s physical location. Physical location is designated by the tray, shelf, section, and face level.
- After processing, trays must be moved to the shelving area and accurately placed in the proper location by tray size, using either book carts or a power lift.
30% Reshelves requested materials from the annex. Safely uses the various heavy machinery including a power lift, electric pallet jack, and order picker to place storage trays on shelves in warehouse up to twenty feet high. Participates in all required OSHA and other safety training in order to use the heavy machinery. Safely lifts heavy boxes up to chest height and pushes heavy carts.
25% Responsible for assisting in the loan process as needed, using Alma, Aeon, and ILLiad software to fill requests for University of Iowa and worldwide users by printing out requests, pulling materials, and preparing material for delivery. Each process involves maintaining data to track requests as well as providing logistical support while the item is on loan and then checking it back in upon return.
5% Various, ongoing tasks which include but are not limited to:
- Other related, technical and patron service duties as assigned by the supervisor.
- Participates in library-wide staff development activities. Participates in departmental activities and meetings.

In addition to performing the duties described above according to the specified performance expectations, Libraries' staff need to meet Libraries’ and University expectations regarding:
- Attendance, punctuality and use of work resources (UI’s Policy on Ethics and Responsibilities and Work Rules)
- Continuous developmental growth (Libraries’ Development and Diversity Guidelines)
- Technology core competencies (Libraries’ IT Core Competency Checklist)
Minimum Eligibility Requirements:
- Two years of library work experience, or
- A combination of related work experience, undergraduate education, and/or post-high school library training totaling three years.
Special Qualification
- Ability to regularly move up to 20 lb and occasionally move up to 60 lb.

- Demonstrated ability to follow written and verbal instructions and perform routine actions.

- Experience with daily operations of an academic library or storage facility.
- Experience with Alma, Interlibrary Loan software and/or associated image scanning equipment.
