JOB SUMMARY:
Assist the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and/or the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) during on-site investigation of Textron Aviation aircraft accidents. Also assist foreign countries for aircraft accident investigation. Prepare accident investigation reports for management and engineering.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- This position provides assistance to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) or foreign authority during investigation of aircraft accidents/incidents involving Textron Aviation Aircraft. After verified notification, the ASI travels to aircraft accident sites as expediently as possible. Coordinates with NTSB/FAA Investigator-In-Charge, or foreign authority, on-site, and assists them in the examination of the aircraft wreckage. The on-site portion of the investigation can be physically demanding, including long hours outside with varying temperature and altitudes. Extensive walking or hiking can also be expected.
- Examines and/or reconstructs airframe as necessary to facilitate investigation to determine pre-accident/incident condition and configuration. Determine occupant survivability in respect to cabin structural integrity, seats and restraint systems, “G” loads, fire, and general airframe disruption. Collects and evaluates data and information in respect to circumstances surrounding the accident event, such as weather, pilot training and duty schedule, mission objectives, aircraft limitations, aircraft maintenance history, fueling history, etc.
- Reports investigation findings/evaluations and prepares special analysis for NTSB, FAA, or foreign authority to assist in their efforts to determine “probable cause” of the accident. Prepares factual preliminary and final reports for Textron Aviation management and engineering staff, and assists in the issuance of safety literature (i.e. service bulletins, airworthiness directives, etc.). Represents Textron Aviation and provides technical assistance during specialized analytical investigation procedures subsequent to the accident (i.e. engine and propeller teardown examinations).
- May be asked to participate in NTSB, FAA, or foreign authority, technical reviews, hearings, or meetings as appropriate to the investigated aircraft accident. Reviews NTSB, FAA, or foreign authority reports, and justifies circumstances where Textron Aviation’s report differs from their reports.
- Analyzes allegations and claims made in legal actions against Textron Aviation. May be required to provide knowledge of Textron Aviation aircraft accidents through legal deposition and trials. Educates Textron Aviation defense attorneys as to the technical aspects of the allegations or claims and to the possible technical defenses to the plaintiff’s allegations or claims.
- Bachelor’s degree required.
- FAA Pilot’s License or FAA Airframe and Powerplant license required, both preferred.
- Minimum of 2 years of air safety investigation experience or relative aviation experience in engineering, piloting or maintenance required.
- Valid driver’s license and must be able to obtain a passport

- Familiarity with Safety Management Systems (SMS), Risk Management, Human Factors, Accident Prevention and Emergency Response Planning
