Appalachian State University, in North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains, prepares students to lead purposeful lives as global citizens who understand and engage their responsibilities in creating a sustainable future for all. The transformational Appalachian experience promotes a spirit of inclusion that brings people together in inspiring ways to acquire and create knowledge, to grow holistically, to act with passion and determination, and embrace diversity and difference. As one of 17 campuses in the University of North Carolina system, Appalachian enrolls about 19,000 students, has a low student-to-faculty ratio and offers more than 150 undergraduate and graduate majors.
Admission Counselor positions are valuable introductions to a fulfilling career in higher education and can serve as gateways into full-time positions with Appalachian. Admission Counselors serve as Appalachian’s first point of contact with prospective students and their families – so knowledge of the University and desire to share these experiences can make you an ideal fit for our team.
Admission Counselors are key members of the Admissions team that assist in recruiting, selecting and yielding Appalachian’s next class of students alongside full-time professional Appalachian Admission Counselors. Key responsibilities include building positive educational partnerships and working relationships with high school counselors and admission staff at community colleges; reaching out and responding to prospective students to promote Appalachian and assist them to effectively navigate the admissions and enrollment processes and ensure that they meet critical deadlines; and counseling prospective students and their family members about admissions criteria and other critical factors in the educational decision process. These positions also assist with campus visits, open houses, high school and community college programs, and other events. Admission Counselors will have the chance to participate in a variety of roles in enrollment management during their tenure including but not limited to customer service, operations, communications, technology, transfer services, financial aid, and more.
These temporary positions typically last a year (and are renewable for up to 2 years) and are responsible for extensive travel primarily in North Carolina though some travel to adjacent states is possible. Admission Counselors provide professional recruitment presentations to individuals and large groups during campus visits, events, and at high schools, community colleges, and college fairs. These presentations are often tailored to specific needs and include information about academic programs, college costs, housing, financial aid, scholarships, application processes, visitation programs, and other pertinent information. Often most rewarding are meetings with prospective students and families to answer questions and provide detailed counseling in the college selection process. Admission Counselors spend much of their time responding to telephone calls and e-mail inquiries, conducting follow-up with students as a result of travel activities and participating in all on and off-campus recruitment events.
